Learn how to set metal type by hand and letterpress print on a platen press. We'll be using similar methods that Gutenberg used 500+ years ago, except we won’t be working by candlelight! Christy will provide an overview of printing history, printer’s measurements, typecase layouts, composing sticks and type lock-ups. Participants will typeset a name or a short line of type, select an ink color and print 20 personalized notecards. You’ll also receive 20 matching envelopes and a stationery box.
Hand typesetting requires attention to detail, manual dexterity, and good vision (don’t forget your glasses if you need them for up close work). No prior experience with letterpress printing is necessary. You will leave with a newfound appreciation for this hands-on work, as well as a beautiful set of personally printed, letterpress notecards.
Price includes all class materials and one-on-one instruction. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting ink on. Be prepared to stand as you work. Stairs are required between studio level and restroom. Our studio can sometimes feel cooler, we suggest wearing layers. Please bring your own covered water bottle and non-alcoholic beverages if you’d like to have something to drink while you work.
