Intro to Typesetting & Letterpress Workshop

Learn how to set metal type by hand and letterpress print on a platen press. We'll be using similar methods that Gutenberg used 500+ years ago, except we won’t be working by candlelight! Christy will give an overview of printing history, printer's measurements, type case layouts, composing sticks and type lock-ups. Participants will typeset their name or a short line of type, select an ink color and print 20 personalized notecards. You’ll also receive 20 matching envelopes and a stationery box.

Workshop size: up to three people, ages 18 and up.

Time commitment: 3 to 3.5 hours

Cost: $150 per person

  • "I had a wonderful time in this class! I learned a lot and was able to get hands-on with the process of setting type and printing what I'd set. As a bonus, I now have some hand-made inserts to add to my Christmas cards!"

  • "Christy taught me things I didn’t even know I needed to learn. She taught key terms, reasoning behind processes and some history of the medium. She walked me through the entire operation. Christy’s a great instructor. So much personal attention and really hands-on."
