Intro to Typesetting & Letterpress

Learn how to set metal type by hand and letterpress print on a platen press. We'll be using similar methods that Gutenberg used 500+ years ago, except we won’t be working by candlelight! Christy will give an overview of printing history, printer's measurements, type case layouts, composing sticks and type lock-ups. Participants will typeset their name or a short line of type, select an ink color and print 20 personalized notecards. You’ll also receive 20 matching envelopes and a stationery box. Small class, up to 3 people, ages 18 and up. Time commitment: 3 to 4 hours. Cost per person: $150.

  • "Excellent introduction to the history of typesetting with hands-on activities and a beautiful set of personalized stationery to take home. The space and materials were very well-organized."

    Mariko P., Madison, Wis.

  • "Christy taught me things I didn’t even know I needed to learn. She taught key terms, reasoning behind processes and some history of the medium. She walked me through the entire operation. Christy’s a great instructor. So much personal attention and really hands-on."

    Erika H., Middleton, Wis.
