Framed Ping Letterpress Art Print
Ping is a limited edition art print made in special collaboration with cartoonist, Drew Dernavich. The limited edition includes 100 signed and numbered prints.
Drew is widely known for his distinctive wood-cut style drawings created on scratch board. His cartoons appear regularly in The New Yorker magazine, and he has won the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award as the country’s best gag cartoonist. The Ping drawing and its caption were both conceived by Drew. He prepared his drawing for relief printing by hand-carving it onto two linoleum blocks, one block for each color. Christy Nesja designed moveable wood and metal type to integrate the caption in a non-traditional way with Drew’s image. The linoleum blocks and type were locked together in the press bed of our Vandercook SP15. The press was inked and each sheet of paper was hand-cranked across the press bed. This process was repeated for each color. When a sufficient number of high-quality prints were produced, the image and type were disassembled.
This was Nesja Press’s first collaboration with Drew, but unlike the inventor of Ping, we think we got it right on the first try.
Letterpress printed on 100% cotton paper using rubber-based inks, hand carved linoleum blocks and a mix of handset wood and metal type. Trim size 12 x 9 inches. Framed in a 12 x 9 inch wood frame with glass. Choose white or black frame color. A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity will accompany each print.

How we made these: Drew carved his image into two linoleum blocks and sent them to Nesja Press. One of the blocks was notched with a bandsaw to accommodate the placement of type with the image. The rust ink color was printed first, and the green ink color was printed second.
