Little Letterpress Quilt Art Print
We cherish the quilts handed down to us through our families. Lovingly made by grandmas and great-grandmas, they are works of art in and of themselves. Their geometric designs and vintage fabrics have long captured Christy’s heart and eye. Inspired, she set out to make a letterpress quilt using antique metal ornaments and spacers.
Christy designed the quilt to use five different ink colors, hand-mixing several of the colors to get the exact hue she was looking for. Each color required its own press set-up, and each printed a unique, hand-set configuration of ornaments locked-up in the press bed. Printing commenced in order from lightest to darkest color: yellow, orange, gold, purple and finally violet. Great care was taken to ensure colors aligned with one another as intended.
A limited edition of 60 signed and numbered prints were made. Little Letterpress Quilt was selected for the 2023 Hamilton Woodtype and Printing Museum’s New Impressions Exhibit.
Letterpress printed on 100% cotton paper using rubber-based inks and hand-set, antique metal ornaments and spacers. Trim size 10 x 10 inches. Image area 5.375 x 5.375 inches. Packaged in a resealable cellophane sleeve with acid free backing board.

How we made these: Spacing material, not normally meant for printing, was raised to type high to print the solid quilt squares. Fabric patterns were created using combinations of metal ornaments and borders. Each of the five colors was printed as a separate pass on the press.
