Mirror Lake Lily Art Print

$115.00

We enjoy relaxing at an old family cabin in Douglas County, Wis., not far from Solon Springs and the Brule River. The cabin sits on quiet, small Mirror Lake, perfect for navigating with canoes and kayaks. Mid to late summer, water lilies bloom around the lake’s edges, creating a floating green carpet dotted with white flowers. They are a natural part of the habitat attracting insects, amphibians, fish, birds, and curious humans in canoes and kayaks.

To make this print I built up layers of color with selective overprinting. I started with yellow ink as a base color, adding color runs of light blue, bright green and dark blue. Several of the color runs required multiple passes through the press to achieve the desired ink density. I hand-carved four different blocks, and one of those blocks was further reduced for an additional color pass. All printing was done on a Vandercook SP15 cylinder proofing press.

Limited edition of 50. Trim size 8 x 10 inches. Image area 4.75 x 6.75 inches.

Paper: Neenah Cotton, 110 lb. cover, Pearl White

How we made these: Christy carved four different linoleum blocks. She used carbon paper to transfer her design onto the blocks. The first block printed a base color of yellow. The second block printed the water and subtle shading inside the lily. This block was reduced and used to print the water background again. A third block added green to the lily pads and shaded areas of the water. The final block added a dark blue frame and additional depth to water and shadows.
